Maths Teaching and Learning 

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent, can reason and can solve problems

What maths teaching and learning looks like in our school:

  • Practising basic skills to become fluent
  • Lots of talk—reasoning involving group and paired work, 
  • Children challenging themselves
  • Challenge is provided by going deeper rather than accelerating into new mathematical content.

  • Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach using a range of different representations 
  • Problem solving throughout
  • Making connections to real life maths
  • Mini plenaries to share misconceptions, pose questions, challenge ideas
  • Access to a range of manipulatives/concrete resources

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress will always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through further problem solving and reasoning before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material will consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

This year we have been also able to offer some after school club maths sessions called 'First Class at Number' in Year 1 and 2. These sessions are really successful and helps to support and consolidate children's understanding in the topic of number. 

In order to support the children's progress and ensure consistent teaching in calculation we use the White Rose Maths Hub materials. This is based on the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach whereby children use a range of different representations to support their learning by moving from objects, to pictures then symbols and words.
