Design and Technology

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

INTENT

At St. Margaret Mary’s our intent is that children will build upon their practical capability in designing and making. They will be encouraged to stimulate originality and enterprise; develop skills using a range of materials and techniques and develop an understanding of the needs of design in order to evaluate their own and others work. They will investigate and question designs and contrast own ideas. They will develop vocabulary skills through using appropriate technical language to describe processes

IMPLEMENTATION

At St. Margaret Mary’s, Design and Technology is delivered through an engaging creative curriculum approach of Topic based learning. Children will work with a number of materials, including fabric, card, wood and food. They will learn how to use tools correctly and safely. They will be taught the process of designing, making and evaluating their work.

IMPACT

Children will be assessed against end of year group expectations and will be ready for the next stage in their education. They will be excited and engaged 'designers'.

Please follow the link below to find out how our children continue to build their knowledge and skills in design and technology, as they continue their learning in our junior school.
