Children are assessed at the end of reception against 'Early Learning Goals' and the aim is for all children to achieve a 'Good Level of Develop' or GLD which includes PSE, physical development, language and communication, reading, writing, number and shape, space and measure.

Towards the end of Year 1, children are asked to read forty words which are a mixture of real and made up or 'alien' words. The check aims to assess how well children are able to use the phonics they have been learning throughout their time in school.

Towards the end of Year 2, children are assessed across reading, writing, maths and science. The majority of children will reach the 'expected' standard for a child in year 2, a number may reach a higher standard and achieve 'greater depth.'
