Art and Design

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

At St. Margaret Mary’s, Art and Design is delivered through an engaging creative curriculum approach of Topic based learning.

As a school we follow ‘The Suffolk’ scheme of work which provides a variety of units to ensure coverage of all elements of the Art and Design Curriculum. The units provide a progression and continuity of learning experiences across the 6 areas: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, Textiles and 3D. Pupils will learn about great artists and use the work of artists as a stimulus to produce their own creative works.

Although sketchbooks are not a requirement at EYFS and Key Stage 1, as a school, all children from Nursery through to Year 2 have their own sketchbook to record their ideas and experiences. This will follow them throughout the school as their own personal art journey.

At St. Margaret Mary’s our intent is that children will be engaged, inspired and challenged. They will be equipped with knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They will develop their ability to think critically and evaluate their work and the work of others.
